About Sihlangu Primary

Our Rich History

A Legacy Since 1919

Over 106 Years of Excellence

Sihlangu Primary School is one of the oldest schools in the Nkomazi region, with a proud history dating back to 1919.

The school was originally established next to the Sihlangu river, serving the rural community of Madadeni. In later years, the school was relocated to its current position where it stands today, continuing its mission of providing education to the children of Sihlangu village and surrounding areas.

Throughout its 106+ years of existence, Sihlangu Primary has witnessed the transformation of South African education, from the colonial era through apartheid to the democratic dispensation. Despite the challenges faced by rural schools, Sihlangu Primary has remained a beacon of hope and learning for generations of learners.

The school operates in Sihlangu rural village, known as Madadeni in the Nkomazi Municipality. It serves an underprivileged community, reflected in its quintile 1 status, which means it receives government funding to support learners from low-income households.

Did You Know? The school was originally named after the Sihlangu river where it was first established. "Sihlangu" in Siswati means "shield" - symbolizing protection and strength for the community.

Our Community

Sihlangu Village & Madadeni

Quintile 1 Status

As a quintile 1 school, we serve learners from the poorest households. This classification means our school receives government funding to provide no-fee education, meals, and learning materials to all enrolled learners.

Socio-Economic Context

The school operates under challenging socio-economic conditions. Many families rely on social grants, informal work, or are unemployed. Despite these challenges, our community values education and supports the school.

Community Partnership

We work closely with the local chief, traditional council, parents, and SGB to ensure that our learners receive the support they need to succeed despite difficult circumstances.

Our Journey

From Underperforming to Excellence

The school was not performing well some years back, but through dedicated efforts from the staff, SGB, and community support, we have strived to do better as years progressed and became a good performing school.

Our improvement journey includes:

  • Regular teacher development and training
  • Enhanced monitoring and support for learners
  • Parent involvement programmes
  • Extracurricular activities to boost confidence
  • Nutrition programme to support learning
